Three Barn Quilts have been hung on the north face of the Fairchild-Knox Hay Barn.
Tonganoxie Community Historical Sociey
201 W. Washington St.
Tonganoxie, KS

Museum - The block is mounted on the north face of the Fairchild Knox Barn, which was re-built after a fire destroyed to original 1901 barn.  This barn and 6.3 acres of land were donated to the Society in 1987 by Mildred Young, the farmer's daughter.
The block is best viewed from 8th Street.  Turn west on 8th from Highway 24-40, just south of Highway 16.

Pattern: Farmer's Daughter

The Farmer's Daughter quilt block first appeared in print in the Kansas City Star on March 16, 1935.  Per the Star notes that day, it "is an old pattern."
The barn which is a backdrop to our collection of barn blocks was built in 1932, replacing the original dairy barn, which had been constructed at the turn of the century and burned down.  The farm was a working dairy farm from 1884 until 1947, throughout the years when Tonganoxie was known as "the dairy center of Kansas."
The granddaughter of the original dairy farmer (Frank Fairchild) came to own this property when it was passed on from her father, Archie Knox and his wife, Bessie, who operated the dairy farm until 1947.  In 1985, the barn and the attached milking parlor and the silo, were donated to the Tonganoxie Community Historical Society by the farmer's daughter, Mildred Young.

Pattern: Sunflower

There are many sunflower quilt patterns, but this one best displays the vibrant colors of the sunflower. The wild native sunflower was designated the Kansas State Flower in 1903.  It greeted early settlers who traveled westward through Kansas on the many trails that crossed Kansas.
Native Americans used the wild sunflowers for food as long ago as 3,000 years. Plains tribes cultivated the sunflower.  The native sunflower grows up to 15' in height and each flower head produces as many as 1000 seeds. Sunflower seeds are rich in protein.
The scientific name of sunflowers is Helianthus, from the Greek word helios for sun and anthus meaning flower.  The sunflower is a member of the Asteraceae family.

Pattern: Double Aster

Asters were cultivated in the eastern United States since colonial times. Relatives of these cultivated species grew abundantly on the Kansas prairies and were known as wild asters.
The aster is a member of the Asteraceae family, as is the sunflower.

Crooked Post Winery
We bought the property in 2011 and built the winery in 2013. We opened for business in 2014 and have added brick fired pizza ovens and patios, including the side patio where the barn quilts are displayed. We host special events like barn quilt painting classes and other events related to being a destination winery.

This block is painted for all my cats, past and present. The yellow one has some white spots on it and represents the cat named Freddy that lived at the winery for a year.  The neighbor lady and I fed it all of 2016, but in the spring of 2017 he started to go downhill.  We ended up taking him home where he could get care and attention and after nearly dying he is the 5th cat member of our family at present date.

I painted this one because I love watching the hummingbirds all summer and have food out at both the winery and our house, for not only these birds but yellow finches and other birds as well.  It is our job to help take care of nature.  In the spring I will be planting flowers for the monarch butterflies as well at the winery.
